I have always been a big believer in doing things yourself. It is not just a matter of the money involved either. There is a sense of accomplishment that goes with knowing that you did it all yourself. When it came to installing new carpets, I was quite sure that I could do it myself. I didn't need to hire any carpet installers. DIY carpet installation would work as well for me as DIY cabinet installation had worked the year before.
Boy was I in for a surprise! Installing carpets is harder than I had thought it would be. The problem with carpet installation is that it is harder to cut and measure carpets than it should be. Working with wood is easy. It is solid, it is the same length at all times, and it never changes.
It is easy to measure, easy to cut, and easy to install. Carpets, by contrast, are grouchy things. They can stretch, they can compress, and they can change. What carpet installation experts don't tell you is that you have to actually cut a little bit of extra carpet. It is a strange rule of carpet that no one seems to understand, but there is always less carpet than there should be.
